Hydra DIY game console →
Filed under: Gaming Andre LaMothe, a programmer and systems designer who’s a bit of a superstar in the homebrew and DIY worlds (largely for his XGameStation, a user-programmable game console) has added another, more sophisticated model to his XGS stable, the Hydra. Where the previous system had been based on a simple, 8-bit SX52 processor, the new Hydra is centered around the more...

Miniature engine builders in NYT →
Mark Frauenfelder: The NY Times has a fun article about guys who make beautiful, working replicas of internal combustion engines. Make magazine hosted these delightful makers at Maker Faire in May. Downsizing may be a chilling concept nearly everywhere, but not in the workshop of George Luhrs, a machinist in Shoreham, N.Y., with an affinity for the very small. Mr Luhrs has built a...

Crustaceans chewing up Japanese island →
David Pescovitz: At left is a photo taken between 1955 and 1965 of Hoboro Island off the coast of Hiroshima. At right is a recent photo of the same island. Hoboro Island is quickly being eaten away by isopod crustaceans digging into the rock to deposit eggs. From MSN-Mainichi Daily News: “It’s rare, even on a global scale, to hear of biological erosion that has proceeded on such...

Teleflip, the people who made it really easy to email any cell phone, have unleashed a new service called FlipMail, designed to forward emails to your cell phone as text messages. Here’s how it works: You sign up for FlipMail, giving them your phone number, email address, and email password (not easy to do, I know). Then you give FlipMail the email address you want to receive email from,...

China's manufacturing cities - photo gallery →
Cory Doctorow: Wired News is sporting a gallery of photos of the vasty manufacturing cities of China, eye-melting panoramas of endless assembly lines and dormitories and cafeterias. I just attended a jaw-dropping talk by Chumby’s Bunnie Huang about his tours of Chinese factories on the way to setting up Chumby manufacturing and every slide inspired a fresh weirdness. For example, in one...

Red and White Fleet (3/5) →
We did this yesterday for Eileen’s birthday and took the sunset cruise. It was pretty fun and an enjoyable way to spend two hours. However, it is definitely touristy. Food was served buffet style with it being fairly simple fare: pizza, salad, sandwiches etc. The boat itself was in good condition. The only thing was that it was fairly expensive at $40.

Golden Island Chinese Cuisine (4/5) →
Golden Island is another one of the places frequently chosen for work dinners. It serves tasty food but we tend to get the same dishes repeatedly. The “Famous House Chicken” is roasted and one of the must order items. Anyone that I have ever introduced this dish to have always loved it. The oyster omelette is also a must try if you like oysters. It is very similar to a dish...

Fiber optic tablecloth: the new candlelit dinner →
Filed under: Misc. Gadgets We highly doubt LumiGram’s Luminous Fiber Optic Tablecloth was designed with power outages in mind, but why hook up a boring string of lamps or fiddle with half melted candles when you can plug this bad boy into the generator? The cloth, which has fiber optics woven throughout, cotton borders, and a Europlug mains adapter, proves most useful when the lights are...
